Many of the mistakes that you are familiar with when it comes to search engine optimization are things you have heard about again and again, and you are certainly not guilty of these crimes, at least not anymore. But there may still be some things that you are doing, possibly inadvertently, that could be interfering with a great search engine placement. Here are a few things that an online marketing company would be looking for, and hopefully helping you to change, so that your site can truly flourish on the first page of the search engine results pages (SERPs).
1. Pull down navigation: It should be obvious when you think about it, but search engine spiders cannot fill out any forms, so it is impossible for them to access any pull down pages from your navigation bar. This does not necessarily mean that you should never use them, they do have a place in some instances, but keep in mind that you want to use this technique sparingly because it will impede the proper indexing of your site.
2. Frames: This programming and design technique offers users a stationary view of part of the site, while other parts of the site will scroll and move. Might look fancy, like something you want to try, but Google will even tell you that frames cause problems because they will have a separate URL from the rest of the page, and interfere with indexing because of this. Your entire page needs to be seen as one unit, not a grouping of separate units, for proper indexing. There are many ways in which you can give visitors a terrific experience once they get to your site, avoid using the old fashioned frames. Frames may be indexed separately from the rest of the page, leaving parts of the page orphaned and giving users an error message.
3. Home page: For your home page, which your online marketing company will explain as the one that usually gets the highest page rank for your site, you want to make sure it is content rich and filled with information and good navigation. Avoid the temptation of using a “splash” page or landing page that will then lead to your home page. Go right for the big money when visitors arrive, and impress them (and the search engines, too) with a great home page.
4. Hidden text and doorway pages: These are considered to be very much “black hat” search engine optimization techniques and will almost always lead to trouble, including having your site penalized, and possibly even blacklisted by the search engines. Avoid doing this at all cost!
If you are not using any of these techniques that can get you into trouble with the search engines, then you are headed in the right direction. Online marketing companies can help you to fine tune every aspect of your online marketing plan and make your site run very smoothly. Just be sure to choose one that is not going to recommend any of these questionable techniques.
