5 Important Ways to Audit Your SEO Tactics

Periodically, every webmaster needs to audit the SEO tactics and do an audit to determine whether or not there are changes that need to be made. Here are five different ways that every webmaster should check to see if things are running smoothly.  If you are not sure how to go about the audit yourself, you can hire the services of an internet marketing firm to help with the details and make sure everything is going right.  Understand that there are different levels of SEO, and this list will address the on-page search engine optimization techniques that should be reviewed.

1. Title tags: All title tags should be carefully checked to make sure that they contain the right keywords and that they are in the right format for indexing.  If the site contains many pages, it can be helpful to use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the changes necessary and when they are made.  Title tags should not simply contain the company name, they should incorporate the keywords that are most relevant for that page.  Ensure that title tags are the right length (approximately 50-60 characters, but ranging from 40-69 is acceptable).  Missing title tags should be added.  Additionally, title tags should be unique for each page, depending on the content on the page.  Slight variations are sometimes all that is needed.

2. Meta tags: The meta tags and meta descriptions should be different for each page.  They should contain as many keywords as possible, yet be informative and explain what the content of the page is.  Take the time to write out helpful meta tags and meta descriptions; this is what people will see in the search results.  Meta tags should be 160-200 characters long.  If you are having difficulty with developing strong meta tags, you can work with an Internet marketing firm for advice.

3. Alt tags: Alt tags are the tags used for images, and they are important for on-page search engine optimization.  Be sure that all images contain alt tags and that the alt tags contain keywords that are descriptive to the page content.

4. Name all images: The images that are on your site should all have names that contain the keywords for that post or page.  Avoid using your company name, and instead use keywords to identify the pictures.  This will help with organic search engine optimization.

5. Header tags: Search engines need explicit information when it comes to headings.  Using H1 and H2 tags help the spiders know what is on the page.  It’s probably best to avoid too many subheadings, keeping it simple by using H1 for the title or headline of the page and using H2 for the subheadings is probably enough.  Header tags are not just good for the search engines, but headings help to break up long sections of text, making it easier for readers, as well.
